Dietmar Hamann says Liverpool cannot afford to lose to Arsenal at Anfield in the Premier League this weekend

Dietmar Hamann has warned Liverpool that their top-four hopes will be all but over if they lose to Arsenal in Saturday’s Premier League clash at Anfield.

The Reds are aiming to bounce back from the disappointment of their 3-1 loss to Leicester City in the top flight on Monday, a result which dealt a damaging blow to Liverpool’s hopes of finishing in the top four.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are also looking to get their Premier League campaign back on track as they bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Liverpool have endured a stuttering start to 2017 under Jurgen Klopp and former Reds star Hamann has warned that they can ill afford to lose to Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday.

Writing in his column for Paddy Power, Hamann said: “If Liverpool lose to Arsenal, it will be very hard for them to get back in the Champions League race.

“Arsenal, on the other hand, still have a chance to qualify even if they get beaten.

“Neither side can afford to drop points because if you look at the teams around Liverpool and Arsenal – Chelsea, Tottenham, Man City and even United – the worrying thing is that those clubs seem to be coming into form at the right time.

“If you find yourself five or six points behind those teams it’s going to be very hard to make up the difference.”

Liverpool finished eighth in the Premier League and without a trophy last season, while Arsenal ended up in second place but 10 points behind champions Leicester City.
